Cleveland, OH (January 21, 2021) – A motor vehicle accident reported in the Cleveland area claimed the lives of two people on Wednesday morning. On January 20, the Cleveland Police Department and EMS were requested to provide assistance at the site of a crash on Interstate 71.
Reports from authorities show that just after midnight, a 67-year-old man was driving a semi-truck along Interstate 71 when his front-left tire went flat. As a result, the man pulled his vehicle along the side of the road near Interstate 480.
For unknown reasons, the semi-truck and a Volkswagen Jetta collided. A passenger in the Jetta, identified as a 34-year-old man, was ejected from the vehicle and onto the highway. He and the driver, a 46-year-old man, were both fatally injured. Crews arrived at the scene and pronounced the victims deceased.
No other injuries were reported in the accident. At this time, the incident remains under investigation.
Our condolences go out to the families of the two victims who lost their lives in this accident.
Fatal Truck Accidents in Ohio
For over 20-years, the state of Ohio has strictly enforced mover over laws along state roads and highways. This law requires vehicles to move over or slow down if law enforcement officers, tow truck drivers, or emergency responders are parked on the site of the road. Although these laws are designed to protect those who protect us, there are many instances where drivers fail to follow these laws. As a result, they cause devastating motor vehicle collisions.
Every year, more than 1,100 people lose their lives in motor vehicle collisions throughout our state. Accidents involving semi-truck account for over 10% of these collisions. The size and weight of 18-wheelers, combined with traveling at high rates of speed, increase the chances that people involved in collisions with them will be fatally injured. When victims lose their lives in truck accidents, their families are often left with overwhelming pain and suffering. In many cases, these accidents force families to spend tens of thousands of dollars on unexpected funeral costs. Although it may seem like no amount of compensation could ever make us whole again after experiencing the loss of a loved one, filing a wrongful death lawsuit in Cleveland helps grieving families collect the compensation they need to cover the costs they face after losing a loved one.
