Akron, OH (August 26, 2020) – An automobile accident reported early Tuesday morning claimed one person’s life in the Akron area. At around 7:45 a.m., on August 25, police, firefighters, and ems in Summit County responded to the scene of a fiery incident on Ohio State Route 8.

Reports from authorities show that a car and a gasoline tanker truck collided on Ohio State Route 8 near the Cuyahoga River between Gorge Boulevard and Upton Avenue. The crash caused both vehicles to burst into flames while spewing gasoline from the tanker truck. The water leaked through a storm sewer down into the Cuyahoga River, causing a fire in the water.

Crews responded to the site of the accident and aggressively battled the blaze. Within a short amount of time, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in the water and both vehicles. Throughout the process, firefighters went to around one hundred homes asking people to evacuate the area until the fire was taken under control.

The driver of the car sustained fatal injuries in the accident. The victim, who is unidentified as this time, was declared deceased at the scene. The driver of the tanker truck escaped serious injuries. At this time, the police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

We would like to express our deepest condolences to the family of the victim who lost their life in this accident. Our thoughts are with them at this time.
