Ohio driver survives crushing accident with truck

The driver of a Chevrolet Cruze was lucky to walk away from a horrifying accident on Ohio’s Interstate 70 near Bethel Township.

It seemed like everyone was amazed that the driver had no serious injuries. The local fire department even posted photos of the accident online. In the photos, it’s clear that the Chevy was pinned between one side of a semitruck and a cement highway barrier. The entire front end of the car appears to be crushed against the truck, with its back end is high in the air.

One look at the photos can give you a sharp reminder of why it’s so important to drive carefully near semitrucks and other large vehicles — especially when attempting to pass them. It’s easy to get in a truck driver’s blind spot.

Here are some important reminders for driving near a semi:

  • Remember: The bigger the vehicle, the bigger the blind spot. If you can’t see the driver in a truck’s side mirrors, assume that the driver can’t see you.
  • Stay a minimum of 30 feet behind a semitruck on the highway in order to stay out of its blind spots.
  • Never attempt to pass a semitruck on the right. That’s the most likely way to end up in the kind of squeeze accident that occurred recently.
  • If you find yourself riding alongside a semi, either speed up or slow down in order to get out of those blind spots.

Unfortunately, the safety measures you take are only part of the equation when it comes to highway safety. If you’re involved in an accident with a truck that wasn’t your fault, it’s important to find out what options you have to claim compensation for your losses.
