According to news sources, the family of a man who was murdered in 2016 has filed a lawsuit against Cabela’s for wrongful death. The 21-year-old man was killed by a man who is now 69 years old. The older man was convicted of murder and is currently serving a sentence of life without the possibility of parole at the Richland Correctional Institution.

The complaint was filed by the family in the Wayne County Court of Common Pleas. Cabela’s reportedly sold the black powder gun that the older man used to shoot the 21-year-old man. The older man had a prior conviction for a felony assault in 2001. The plaintiffs are arguing that Cabela’s should not have sold the gun to the man because he was prohibited from owning firearms.

The man reportedly purchased the gun over the phone from Cabela’s in 2014. He later purchased a loading kit to load the black powder into the gun, which was a replica of an antique gun. The older man later used the gun to shoot and kill the younger man. The sale of the weapon was prohibited under Ohio’s state law.

When people are killed because of the wrongful actions of others, their families may be able to sue both the people who were directly responsible as well as other parties whose negligence contributed to the deaths. Identifying all potential defendants that can be named in a wrongful death lawsuit may help families to hold all of those who are responsible for the deaths accountable for their actions. Experienced attorneys may help their clients to identify the parties that should be named as defendants. They may then work to recover the maximum amount of damages that are needed to make the families financially whole.
