A man who was struck by a tractor-trailer in one of Interstate 90’s eastbound lanes on Thursday, June 14, has died. The 2 p.m. incident that claimed his life occurred right around mile marker 151 south of where State Route 611 intersects with I-90 in Avon.
According to witnesses, the 58-year-old North Ridgeville man was seen exiting his vehicle and walking along the interstate when the 18-wheeler’s driver crashed into him. They noted that he had apparently crossed into the path of an active traffic lane before being struck.
Emergency crews arriving at the crash scene quickly stabilized the man enough to transport him to Avon’s University Hospital. By the time he arrived there, he was in critical condition.
Officers with the Avon Police Department are working in conjuction with the Ohio State Highway Patrol to investigate the crash. So far police have yet to release details about why the motorist may have exited his vehicle and then walked along the busy highway.
I-90 was closed for at least three hours after the crash as police tried to make sense of what had happened.
Police haven’t yet released any details about whether they intend to issue any traffic citations to the tractor-trailer driver or whether they plan to charge him with any crime.
In virtually every state in this country, traffic laws exist prohibiting motorists from stopping on the shoulder of an interstate or walking along it because of how potentially deadly it can be. Sometimes such stops are unavoidable though, particularly in cases in which a car becomes disabled.
If your loved one has either been seriously injured or killed in an interstate crash, a Cleveland motor vehicle accidents attorney may advise you of your right to recover medical and funeral costs.
