Coping with the trauma of a car accident

When driving a car, there are many factors that are out of our own control. This could be the weather, the road in front of us, but most notably, other drivers and their capacity to create damage through their actions.

If you have been injured in a car accident, you will know that incidents can occur in a split second, but the damage that is left both mentally and physically can last a lifetime.

Common symptoms of trauma

If you have been through an incident in a vehicle, then beyond the physical suffering that you went through will likely be the mental trauma and emotional stress that you have likely been enduring since the accident took place. Common symptoms of trauma include the feeling of being disconnected and not associated with the rest of the world, and feeling numb from both happiness and sadness. This can be the brain's way of protecting you from the severe emotions that you felt.

You may also have severe anxiety, stress and flashbacks of the event taking place. You may also be having obsessive thoughts and going over the incident in your mind constantly.

What you can do about trauma

If you have been through a traumatic car accident, it is very important that you do not suffer in silence. You should accept that this pain is a result of such an event, and it is important that you invest time into healing mentally, just as you take time to heal from the physical repercussions of an accident. You may also be able to recoup expenses from your insurance provider for therapy and rehabilitation.
